Abstract

Defect removal efficiency is important for evaluating how effectively software teams detect and eliminate defects across different development phases before they reach later stages or production. Software defects may originate during requirements, design, coding, integration, testing, deployment, and maintenance, but early removal usually reduces correction cost and prevents defect leakage. Traditional quality assessment often focuses on total defect counts, but it may not clearly show how efficiently each phase identifies and removes the defects introduced within or before that phase. This article focuses on defect removal efficiency across software development phases by examining defect origin, detection stage, phase-wise review effectiveness, testing performance, leakage rate, and correction effort. The study discusses how DRE measurement can help identify weak lifecycle phases, improve review and testing practices, prioritize quality control activities, and reduce late-stage failures. The article concludes that systematic defect removal efficiency analysis can improve software reliability, reduce rework cost, strengthen process maturity, and support higher-quality software delivery.
