Software Defect Density Analysis Across Development Phases

Software defect density analysis is important for understanding how defects are distributed across different development phases such as requirements, design, coding, testing, integration, deployment, and maintenance. Software projects often generate defects at multiple stages, but the cost and difficulty of correction usually increase when defects are detected late in the lifecycle. Traditional defect reporting may focus only on total defect counts, but this does not clearly show which phase contributes the highest defect concentration or where process weaknesses occur. This article focuses on software defect density analysis across development phases by examining defect count, module size, phase-wise defect origin, detection stage, severity level, and correction effort. The study discusses how defect density metrics can help identify high-risk phases, improve review practices, prioritize testing, and strengthen process control. The article concludes that phase-wise defect density analysis can reduce defect leakage, improve software quality, support better resource allocation, and increase reliability in software development projects.
