Software maintenance knowledge transfer is an important practice in vendor-based projects where application support, defect correction, enhancements, and operational responsibilities are transferred between client teams and external vendors. In enterprise systems, poor knowledge transfer can lead to delayed issue resolution, repeated mistakes, dependency on outgoing teams, incomplete understanding of business rules, and increased maintenance risk. This article discusses how structured knowledge transfer supports continuity in long-term software maintenance. It explains the role of system documentation, code walkthroughs, module ownership records, support manuals, defect history, configuration details, deployment procedures, and handover sessions in improving vendor readiness. The article also highlights common challenges such as incomplete documentation, limited access to original developers, unclear support scope, hidden dependencies, and weak validation of transferred knowledge. A structured knowledge transfer approach is presented to improve support efficiency, reduce transition risk, strengthen accountability, and ensure stable maintenance of enterprise applications. The study concludes that effective knowledge transfer improves vendor performance, reduces operational disruption, and supports sustainable software maintenance in outsourced project environments.
