Abstract

Spiral and incremental software development models are important approaches for managing software projects that require staged delivery, risk control, and continuous refinement. The spiral model emphasizes repeated cycles of planning, risk analysis, engineering, and evaluation, making it suitable for complex and high-risk projects where uncertainty must be reduced gradually. The incremental model focuses on delivering software in smaller functional parts, allowing users to receive working features earlier and provide feedback during development. Traditional single-pass development models may become ineffective when requirements evolve, risks are unclear, or complete system delivery takes a long time. This article presents a comparative study of spiral and incremental software development models by examining risk handling, requirement flexibility, customer involvement, delivery pattern, cost control, testing strategy, and suitability for different project types. The study discusses how the spiral model supports strong risk management, while the incremental model improves early delivery and progressive functionality. The article concludes that both models are useful, but the choice depends on project complexity, risk level, requirement stability, customer participation, and expected delivery schedule.
