Abstract

Software reengineering is important for improving legacy information systems that have become difficult to maintain, integrate, secure, or scale over time. Legacy systems often contain outdated programming languages, rigid database structures, undocumented business rules, obsolete interfaces, duplicated logic, and tightly coupled modules that increase operational risk and maintenance cost. Traditional replacement approaches may be expensive and risky because many legacy systems still support critical business processes. This article focuses on software reengineering strategies for legacy information systems by examining code restructuring, reverse engineering, database migration, interface modernization, module decomposition, documentation recovery, and incremental system transformation. The study discusses how reengineering can preserve existing business functionality while improving maintainability, interoperability, performance, and long-term system adaptability. The article concludes that structured reengineering strategies can reduce modernization risk, extend system life, improve software quality, and support smoother transition toward newer technology platforms.
