Software Effort Estimation Using Function Point Analysis

Software effort estimation is important for planning project cost, schedule, staffing, and delivery commitments before software development begins. Function Point Analysis provides a structured size-based estimation method by measuring software functionality from the user’s perspective through inputs, outputs, inquiries, internal files, and external interface files. Traditional effort estimation often depends on expert judgment or rough comparison with past projects, but these approaches may become inaccurate when requirement scope, functional complexity, or productivity assumptions are unclear. This article focuses on software effort estimation using Function Point Analysis as a systematic method for converting functional size into development effort. The study discusses how function points can be counted, adjusted using complexity factors, and converted into person-hours or person-months using productivity rates. The article concludes that Function Point Analysis can improve estimation accuracy, support better project planning, reduce budget uncertainty, and provide a more transparent basis for software development decision-making.
